What It Takes To Be A Blogger

Any blogger will tell you that blogging is hard work and it takes a lot of time and money. Is it true? Of course. Nothing comes easy. What if you are one of those people who doesn’t think they can be a blogger? It’s intimidating right? There are all of those super successful bloggers and you are over here like, I could never be successful at that. Or maybe you think you are a pro blogger but you’re not seeing any success. Keep reading below if you’d like to know what it takes to be a blogger.

What It Takes To Be A Blogger

So, here’s my full and honest disclosure. I am a new blogger (by six months) and I have not yet succeeded in my blogging business. That’s right, I have this fancy website, I post on every social media platform and then some, yet, I’m not making money. Okay, so I’ve made fifty cents. So, you might be thinking, ‘How does she think she can tell me what it takes to be a blogger?’ You’re right, I’m not super experienced, I’m not making money, and I still have A TON to learn. However, I have learned SO much about blogging and what it takes to be successful. It is still a work in process but I know that once I implement everything I’ve been learning, I will find success. You can too! You can read about how I started my blog in one week here.

Working On Your Website

To be a blogger, you must first perfect your blog. I’m talking, tweak, re-tweak, and tweak some more. My website has been redone a hundred times and continually add to it and edit it. You will learn so many different ways on how to make your blog noticeable and you will implement these techniques over and over again. The blogging world is always adapting and we must adapt with it. I learned SO much from enrolling in Blog Boss Babe, a blogging course. This course has so much information and is always updating to stay relevant with the ever changing blogging market. I knew this course was right for me when I saw the value and price. I have completely transformed my blog game. You can too. Yes, I make a commission from this link if you choose to sign up. What It Takes To Be A Blogger

Hard Working Attitude

You cannot go into blogging thinking it’s going to be super easy and you will barely lift a finger. Sure, there are some bloggers that become successful almost instantly from viral posts. This is definitely not always the case. In fact, it’s very rare. It takes patience and a ton of hard work. You guys, this takes hours upon hours a week. Let me put it this way, I have a full-time job and I come home from work and work on my blog until bedtime and I am still not making money. Now, some of you won’t have to work as many hours as me. I came into this blogging thing blind and knew nothing about blogging. So, it’s taking a little longer than most. You can get some major motivation from the books below.

This is where I tend to struggle the most. I find myself thinking, ‘Is this really worth it? I work so much and am not yet reaping the benefits. Will I ever? I’m human. These thoughts will come into anyone’s mind. It is important to hold onto optimism. When you are feeling down and unsuccessful, just remember, there are thousands and thousands of successful bloggers out there. YOU CAN DO THIS. Don’t give up. Stay positive.

Willingness To Learn

You will not be successful if you already think you know everything there is to know about blogging. This is a fact. There is so much to learn and you will never stop learning. Be willing to learn and take anyone and everyone’s advice. Trust me, this will pay off. Below are a couple of e-books on how to start a blog.

What It Takes To Be A Blogger

Blogging is hard. You wear a million and one hats. Remember, when starting out, you are the Photographer, the writer, the lawyer, the production crew, the video editor, the social media marketer, the president of your company, the graphic designer, and so much more. It’s hard work, it costs money, it’s an investment of your time. Is it going to be hard? Are you going to cry? Are you not always going to be confident? Are you going to struggle? Yes. Will it be worth it? Most definitely. Don’t give up.

How To Receive Free Beauty Products To Review

Have you ever wondered how all of those super famous beauty bloggers are always showing off their free products from huge beauty brands? Like, how do we get in that circle of love, right? I have been getting so many questions from you guys asking me how I get products to review. Well, I’m here today to share with you all how to receive free beauty products to review.

Sign Up For Influenster

Most of you have heard of Influenster, an app that you write product reviews on and help answer other beauties questions. The more active you are on this app, the more you can win “contests”. I know what you’re thinking… Great, Cassie, another app I have to download and waste endless hours answering surveys and reviewing products just to “maybe” win free product. NO! I promise you, it’s legit. I was receiving free products monthly even when I first started my journey as a beauty blogger. If you want to get started and receive free products you can sign up here.

Go Talk To Local Beauty Bars

Okay, this one is a little less orthodox but it truly works! Local hair salons, brow bars, makeup boutiques. They all want you to try out their products so you will keep coming back and referring friends. This works really well if you are looking for samples to try. I always go in fully prepared. Learn about their brand and business, take your business cards, and let them know that you would love to spread the word about their wonderful products on your blog.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask

When I first started my blog I always thought I had to have thousands of page views per month to even consider reaching out to brands and asking for free product to review. I was so wrong! I have sent many emails to brands that I would love to review. Have they all emailed back? No way. But, some brands did! I was so ecstatic. All you have to do is craft a professional email explaining how you would share their brand/products, who your audience is, why it would benefit them, and let them know how much you love their brand and how their brand is relative to your blog. You will be quite surprised at how many brands want to send you free stuff!

Ask For A Partnership

Again, don’t be afraid to reach out to brands that you may see yourself working with. Reach out and ask to partner with a brand you love. Let them know how they can benefit from your partnership. For example, I recently reached out to a vegan beauty brand to see if they would like to partner with me on my End Animal Testing Campaign. I let them know my mission and goal and I told them how being a part of my campaign would benefit them. They are a brand that is a huge advocate for cruelty free products so I knew they would relate. They agreed and I am proud to announce that they will be sending out my newsletter to all their clients! They were also kind enough to send me free products to review on my blog. I will be doing a full feature on them soon so stay tuned!

How I Started My Beauty Blog In One Week

Perhaps you’re thinking it will take a ton of time to get up and running and even more time to keep it going. Well, only part of that is true. It does in fact take some time to keep a blog running. Especially if your blog is your business. However, I am here to tell you that you can start a blog in no time! If you’d like to know how I started my beauty blog in one week keep on reading.

How I Started My Beauty Blog In One Week

Okay so you spend hours on end watching famous beauty bloggers on YouTube and spend even more hours checking out their even more mesmerizing Instagram feeds. Now you’ve decided you’d like to have your own swoon worthy blog, YouTube channel, and Instagram feed. But how do you start? How much does it cost? Will it be successful? In this post, I will outline the exact details of how I started my beauty blog in one week, how I keep it running, and how much it truly costs to have your own blogging business. Below is an outline of what tasks I had to complete in order to start my blog in such a short amount of time.

How I Started My Beauty Blog In One Week

Glittered By Cassie started five months ago when I decided I wanted to start my own blog business and eventually pay off my crippling student loans before I’m seventy, because let’s be real, that sh$t is expensive. I have worked at various cosmetics counters for several years and I love helping women learn about makeup and skin care. I decided it would be a win win. My blog would run to hopefully impact women’s lives and I would have a little extra cash to put towards my bills. (Oh, adult life.)

I had SO many doubts you guys. Like, all of the doubts. You see, I’m a Libra, and naturally I procrastinate. My mind is full of ideas and I’ve tried my hand at entrepreneurship several times before. I never went through with any of it. This time was going to be different though. I was going to do it. No. Matter. What. I was determined. ‘Don’t give up Cassie!’ I thought to myself. Here we are five months in. Going for it.

How I Started My Beauty Blog In One Week

So, here’s what you need to start your dream blog in one week.

A Computer

So, if you’re still awesome old school and go to your nearest public library to hop on the inter webs, then kudos to you! Seriously, I think that is freaking awesome. But, if you are more of a homebody and want to blog in the coziness of your own space, then I recommend getting yourself a computer if you don’t already have one. I have this trusty HP Stream Laptop PC laptop that is super lightweight which makes it easy to take with me to the nearest coffee shops. While we all dream of having the super sleek MacBook Air, sometimes it’s just not in the budget. Especially starting out.

A Website

Yes, you need a website to run your blog. No, you don’t need to hire a techy super genius to set it up. It’s actually quite simple. There are so many different platforms that you can set up your blog. Most of these platforms are FREE. You heard that right. Here are a few that are user-friendly and free.

  • WordPress.com
  • Blogger.com
  • Wix.com
  • Weebly.com

I started with WordPress.com and have since switched to self hosting through Site Ground on WordPress.org. This platform does cost money, but I suggest starting a free blog on WordPress.com or any of the above sites I mentioned. WordPress has been super easy for me. You should know that the free version of WordPress does not include a domain name. When you set up your blog the url will show as yourblogname.wordpress.com. You can purchase a domain name for a very low price on godaddy.com. However, if you decide to invest in a self hosted site, I highly recommend going through Site Ground. Their customer service is amazing! Any time I have a question I just type it into their chat box and receive an answer within seconds. You also receive your domain name free if you choose to go through them. You can get started here if you plan on investing the money.

Okay, so once you have your website secured, you will want to install a theme, which will be the look of your blog. Both WordPress platforms have tons of free and totally awesome themes. Once you set up your theme, it’s time to create your first post. This is the fun part.

A Niche

So, not all bloggers swear by having a niche while others think you must have a niche to be successful. I started out blogging with my niche in mind, Beauty. However, I have since added Lifestyle to my blog. My opinion on the whole having a niche versus not having a niche is this: If you are passionate about only one niche then stick with it. If you find you have tons of ideas in a plethora of niches then you should definitely incorporate those into your blog. Readers can sense when you are running out of material in one niche. Writing about multiple subjects really help your creative juices flow. Once you have come up with several topics you are passionate about then open that laptop and get started.

An Audience

This is the most challenging part when you are first launching your blog. You have so many amazing things to say on your blog and all you want to do is to gain millions of viewers over night. Unfortunately, that is not always the reality. When I hit publish on my first post, it took a whole day just to see five page views. I was crushed. I had just typed up the most fabulous blog post with gorgeous photos to go along with it and I had only received five views?! It doesn’t matter how amazing your content is. If you don’t have an audience, you don’t have a blog. You have a diary. You can gain an audience by doing many things. I started off with creating a social media presence.

A Social Media Presence

For those of you who spend all day on Twitter, tweeting about everything, well you are set! For those who cringe at the thought of posting your thoughts on social media once a week, you may have some work to do. In order for people to start seeing your blog, you need to spread the word. Think of this as free advertising for your blog. I recommend setting up an account with these social media platforms.

  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • Pinterest
  • Snapchat

These are just a few. I set up an account for each of these platforms and that is the main way I get traffic on my blog. Instagram is my favorite way to share my blog as I am more visual. Twitter is a great way to interact with others in your niche. Facebook is a great way to share your posts and announcements. According to many successful bloggers, Pinterest is the biggest traffic driving factor. I am still mastering my Pinterest techniques and feel very optimistic about gaining a lot of success from this platform. I also use Tailwind to schedule all of my pins so I don’t have to spend hours upon hours constantly pinning. This tool is a huge time saver an a very small investment. Super affordable. You can sign up here if you are ready.

A Newsletter

Creating an email newsletter for your subscribers can be so beneficial to your blog. Your readers won’t miss a thing when they are receiving your emails each week. This is a great way to let your loyal readers know about any upcoming blog posts or courses. I set up a free MailChimp account to help me do this. All you have to do is design a campaign and a newsletter, and then upload your blog subscribers, and hit schedule.

Facebook Groups

Requesting an invite to Facebook groups has been a lifesaving decision when it comes to support. Blogging can be very overwhelming. There are a million things you need to learn and implement and sometimes you just feel like it’s too much. I remember when I first started my blog I felt like pulling out my hair! Who do I ask questions when I have no idea what I’m doing?! I joined a few blogging Facebook groups and instantly felt relief. Not only can you ask other bloggers your biggest questions, but you also get an entire group of support from bloggers who know what you’re going through. I can honestly say that without these groups, I would still have no idea what I’m doing. Here are some groups I recommend.

A Never Give Up Attitude

This is the number one thing you need to start and run your own blog. If you are blogging to make money, then you need a never give up attitude. The mindset that no matter what you are going to persevere. Blogging is not easy. Not at all. It takes time, investments, and more time. There are days when I want to cry, scream, throw my laptop across the room. But, I will never give up. You can truly do anything you set your mind to. You have to believe in yourself. You have to set yourself up for success and cut yourself some slack. Don’t forget the reason you started. Your blog is going to rock! Remember to not burn yourself out. Make time for yourself so you don’t end up resenting your blog. You can read my tips on healthy habits here.

How Much Does It Cost?

Make a small investment to start

The cost of starting your blog can vary depending on what choices you make. Below is how much money I spent to get my blog up and running.

Computer- I already had a computer, luckily, but this very inexpensive laptop costed me  $220 brand new. It is less expensive now.

Website/HostingSite Ground $59.40/annual (free domain) self hosted on wordpress .org (free)

Logo- This is completely optional. You don’t need a logo, and often times you can create your own logo. I decided to outsource this to a graphic designer. $45

Tailwind – This program is a time saver when it comes to pinning your posts and other pins. It takes me about an hour and fifteen minutes one day a week to schedule all of my pins. $15.00/month.

Total: $339.40
